Seed Description

Planting

BuckGro Roundup Ready sugarbeet seeds are round, highly processed and have a pellet-like coating material encompassing the seed to enhance plantability. Seed is treated with two different fungicides to protect young seedlings from soil-borne diseases. BuckGro seed is packaged in a convenient, re-sealable zippered pouch containing approximately 25,000 seeds, or enough to plant ½ acre.

Locating your food plot
There are many possibilities to raise sugarbeets on most hunting land. Keep in mind that sugarbeets like sun. Small attraction food plots can be achieved within wooded areas provided there is some light penetration. Open fields, plots along wooded areas, or fertile ground adjacent to swamps can also be ideal locations. Soil type, drainage, available moisture, and nutrients are key components to consider when deciding on a location. Sugarbeets grow best under loamy clay soils, although sandier soils will still work. Just remember that sugarbeet roots can reach down over 6 feet, taking up moisture and nutrients, making some of the most marginal locations suitable choices for growing sugarbeets.
Lightly drag soil to prepare a firm seedbed. Common methods for planting:
  • Broadcast seeder: Most common method of planting. Broadcast 50,000 seeds per acre at a depth of less than 2 inches. Seeds should be spaced 8-10 inches apart. Lightly incorporate seed using a drag, chain link fence, or similar tool. Use an ATV with a roller, chain link fence, or simply rake to firm up the seed bed to ensure good seed to soil contact
  • Corn/sugarbeet row crop planters: Plant sugarbeets 1-1 ½ inches deep. In-row seed spacing of 5-6 inches. Plastic plates are available to plant sugarbeets for most planters. Contact your BuckGro dealer for proper plate size recommendations.
  • Grain drill: This method can work with some modifications. Holes will need to be plugged to allow 6 inch plant spacing. Twelve inch or wider row spacing should work fine. Be careful not to seed sugarbeets greater than 2 inches deep. Contact your BuckGro dealer for further planting instructions.
Expect sugarbeet seedlings to emerge within 10-15 days after planting. As with all crops, there may be some loss from frost, wind, heavy rains, insects, heat, and of course deer and rabbits if they find seeds and seedlings.
