Alpine Currant

Alpine Currant

Screening, wind breaks, travel corridors, cover and juicy red berries, what a shrub! Forms dense foliage 3’-6’ in height with similar width and is drought tolerant. Will grow in full sun but also semi-shade making this plant very easy to grow. Alpine currants need to be planted in groups of eight or more for best pollination.

Apple Antique/Heritage"Purple Haze"

Apple Antique/Heritage"Purple Haze"

This tree I found growing across the street from an old abandoned apple orchard. I was first impressed with the amount of apples this tree was producing. When I tasted the apple I couldn’t believe the fantastic flavors, simply delicious! I put this on my short list of select trees to consider in my selection process but when this apple turned from bright red to purple I had made up my mind to include this tree, very similar to Dolgo. Lots of fruit, great taste, and fantastic visual effects make this apple tree very unique!

Black Chokecherry

Black Chokecherry

Just take a look at the size of the fruit on this selection. The fruit is very large for chokecherry and is the reason that I have propagated this speices from cuttings to insure you will get the same results from your tree. Grows as a shrub or small tree, often forming dense thickets. Fantastic for borders, stream banks and roadsides. Great for cover, browse and berries enjoyed by birds including turkeys and pheasants! Berries can be made into jam or jellies as well. Also consider Arrowwood Viburum!

Beech

Beech

Anyone who has had the Privilege to hunt in a stand of Beech Trees, know just how much Whitetails and Turkeys love this small sweet nut. Plant several together as cross-pollination is required. Beech trees like partial shade and make the ideal choice where full sun is not possible.

Elderberry

Elderberry

Elderberry is a large suckering shrub excellent for wildlife habitat. Fruit makes great jelly or wine. There is lots of talk about deer beds in the Whitetail community. Some of the components needed for deer beds are this 10-12 foot overhead canopy Elderberry provides and it’s ability to grow in filtered light and edges, makes sense to me.

Nanking Cherry

Nanking Cherry

Shrubs that grow wider than they do tall are always great for screening and naturalizing areas. Produces scarlet red edible fruit enjoyed by game and song birds. Whitetails love making scrape lines under these plants at the farm and are browsed extensively.

Nuttall Oak

Nuttall Oak

Very Fast growing and produces a very small acorn preferred by turkeys. Acorns often do not drop from the trees until late in the year making this an important tree in strategic late season food availablity. Leafs retained late into the winter providing all-important cover at a time when most trees are bare. Will grow in most soil conditions including clay.
